Did You Know...
Wakefield has been around since roman times around 43AD and is mentioned in the doomsday book 1089, Sandal Castle was built in 1200, around which the Battle of Wakefield was fought in 1460, from which some say the nursery rhyme the Grand Old Duke of York was born. The Cathedral was built in the1400’s; it has the tallest steeple in west Yorkshire. The Chantry Chapel of St Mary’s that stands on the bridge over the Calder is from the middle ages and only one of 4 remaining in the UK today. There is also a theatre and on the darker side the prison which was first built in 1595 from a £20 endowment from a local solicitors will and from which it is said the nursery rhyme ‘Round and round the mulberry bush’ as prisoners exercised around a mulberry bush!

The area around Wakefield
Be prepared to get off to a quick start from the Wakefield test centre – often the first thing they do with you is a bay park in their car park, also one of the route options leads straight out onto the dual carriage way that runs just out from the centre.
As you come into Wakefield the roundabout from the A650 onto the A61, watch your lane discipline, you can turn right from either lane it is signposted as to which you should use. Then don’t do what I did late one night use the red bus route on the left hand side as you approach the lights and wonder why the cars are all looking at you!
The area around Chantry Bridge has had a lot of work in recent years and need to watch both sign posts and road markings to ensure you are in the correct lane.
If you go the The White Rose shopping centre you will need to tackle the roundabout at junction 28 of the M62 – Tingley roundabout - make sure you approach in the correct lane, watch road signs, markings and light signals – it unwinds like a spiral (snail shell) take it steady and you will be fine.
